● Tharkan :
Cut ties with his old folks to try his own hand at the pirating business
● SkynettheDM :
Were they also pirates or just cargo transporters?
● Tharkan :
Yeah, pirating runs in the family.
● SkynettheDM :
Fair enough, then. When it comes to Traits, I usually go with "one Regional, one 'other' trait".
● SkynettheDM :
But, I'm flexible on this. I think it is an important aspect of the character to have a background tie.
● Tharkan :
Alright. You got no problems with refluffing if the existing traits don't fit ?
● Tharkan :
No mechanical changes, just making the fluff fit better
● Tharkan :
Alrighty. What skills/abilities do you need to sail stuff anyway ?
● SkynettheDM :
If we're talking, "I was raised on Mechanus, hence the +3 on Disable Device", we have an issue.
● SkynettheDM :
Profession: Sailor, Knowledge: Nature/Geography (3 pts. total), Craft (something useful), Swim.
● SkynettheDM :
Everyone on a pirate ship learns a trade; even if it isn't something done /on/ the ship/.
● SkynettheDM :
Quite frankly, most of piracy is waiting and killing time. Learning takes that time away.
● SkynettheDM :
Survival is also a good choice, depending on how optimistic you are about being a castaway.
● Tharkan :
Well, could help with fishing too, if you're running low on food.
● SkynettheDM :
It is more or less the only "legal" document enforceable aboard a pirate vessel.
● SkynettheDM :
Typically a short list of "Do this and we kill you; here's how you get paid."
● SkynettheDM :
The "example" code is a perfect sampling of the in-game system.
● SkynettheDM :
Anyone who attacks a crewmate gets killed. Throw a punch, eat a deserted island.
● SkynettheDM :
Steal from an ally, eat a deserted island. Etc.
● Tharkan :
Well, we'll have to figure out our own when we get the other players
● SkynettheDM :
True. Provided someone can afford the ship on their own and play captain. Or you steal your own
● Tharkan :
Well that'll make a fine first session. Get a crew, get a ship
● Tharkan :
First few sessions in fact, probably
● SkynettheDM :
Stealing a ship makes for a fine bonding experience.
● SkynettheDM :
Next up: determing your function on the ship. There's rank-and-file...
● SkynettheDM :
Which means: you do a lot of unpleasant jobs for modest pay.
● SkynettheDM :
Then there's Marine: who board enemy vessels/encampments.
● SkynettheDM :
And then there's the crew positions: navigator, local guide, carpenter, doctor, cook, lookout...
● SkynettheDM :
.. engineer (toughest gig on the ship), quartermaster, and sailmaster.
● SkynettheDM :
Rank-and-file is where around 85% of pirates work and live. Also known as:
● SkynettheDM :
"A.B.S.": Able-Bodied Seamen. Insert juvenile humor here.
● Tharkan :
Inquisitor's got the divine mojo, so he might as well serve as doctor.
● SkynettheDM :
Fair enough. Most injuries would be easily treated, or you're just there for last rites.
● SkynettheDM :
Anything in between requires more time or tools than you have access to.
● SkynettheDM :
Looks like it is time for me to grab lunch. Email me further questions, cool?
● Tharkan :
Got it. Have a nice lunch :)
